Condom Sense!!

The Malama Pono Health Services Condom Sense!! program is seeking additional community participation from civic-minded youth ages 14 through 25. Call 246-9577 for more details .

Condom Sense began with the basic notion of the mission of Malama Pono Health Services while involving the youth of Kauai in "the message". Initially, one of the successful Public Service Announcements (PSAs) produced for Malama Pono Health Services was on the subject of tattooing and Hepatitis C with the “Let’s Talk About” campaign. For that PSA, Condom Sense recruited Keola Harris ("Junior") and Nick Barker ("Kawika") from that PSA and began to utilize their talents that had been cultivated via Hawaii Children’s Theatre’s “Pono Players” message theatre troupe. What resulted is a great collection of PSAs with the production support from KONG radio and H. Hawaii Media.

Local personality "Augie T." has also lent his talents and time and the project has also brought on board Roxanne Ruby, Jenny Heartsong, Kellie Asai-Lau. The ladies did a most effective PSA with a Malama Pono Health Services client (who is HIV positive). The PSA series has also included local actor/comedian Billy Quebido and local voice actor Jobe Allen. Youth-driven, youth-written, usually funny and mostly in 'pidgin' (local slang dialect in Hawaiian), the Condom Sense PSAs are a provocative and innovative youth media campaign with great slogans like “Be a Hero – Save a Life – Wear a Condom” and “No Shame in Taking Care” and our favorite “Sex Happens, Use Condom Sense.

The Condom Sense program is a work in progress and as funding opportunities permit we hope to do more--including video production. If you are 14 to 25 years of age and interested in becoming part of the Condom Sense Crew, contact Mistee or find us on
